This activity explains the movement of particles of different substances in same medium and helps to understand how diffusion takes place at different rates.
How the movement of particles of different substance takes place?
Aim of the activity
To compare the
rate of diffusion of ink and honey in water
Materials used in the activity
1. Ink
2. Honey
3. Water
4. Two beakers
5. Droppers
Procedure
We take two
beakers filled with same amount of water, first we add a drop of blue or red
ink slowly along with the sides of the first beaker.
After that we
add a drop of honey along with the side of beaker. We make sure not to stir and
leave both the beakers in the corner of the classroom.
We observe the
changes immediately after adding both substances and after few hours or days.
Observation
Immediately after adding the substances
The ink begins
to spread slowly in water without stirring and form swirling patterns but honey
settles at the bottom.
After a few hours
The ink spreads
faster and the water becomes blue or red because particles spread throughout.
But honey takes
longer to spread.
Explanation
The particles
of ink are smaller and lighter and there is weak force of attraction between
them so they move faster and on the other hand honey has heavier particles so
they move slowly.
The speed of
movement of particles depends upon viscosity of the substance.
Conclusion
This activity proves that
1. Particles of matter are continuously moving.
2. The rate of movement or diffusion is different for different substances.
3. Lighter particles move faster than heavier particles.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is diffusion?
Answer – The process of movement of particles form the region of high concentration to the region of low concentration.
2. How long does it take for ink to spread completely in water?
Answer – It takes a few hours depending on temperature.
3. What do you observe immediately after adding both ink and honey in water?
Answer – Ink starts
spreading immediately but honey settle down in the bottom.
