This activity helps us to understand the physical properties of solid substances or materials. The activity has been taken from the chapter 1 Matter in Our Surroundings Class 9 Science.
Physical Properties of Solids
Aim of the activity
To understand the
physical properties of solids
Materials used in the activity
1. A pen
2. A book
3. A needle
4. A piece of wooden stick
5. Hammer
Procedure
We collect a pen, a book, a needle and a piece of wooden stick, then we
place these articles on a white paper sheet and sketch the shape of the above
articles by using a pencil around them.
After that we try to hammer or pull or drop each article to observe any
change in shape.
We compress them one by one.
Observation
We observe that –
1. All objects have a definite shape and fixed volume.
2. These objects can be broken when hammered but don’t change shape.
3. They cannot be compressed.
4. They do not diffuse into each other.
Explanation
Solids are made up of particles that have strong force of attraction between them so they are closely packed. Due to this they have definite shape and volume and are incompressible.
Conclusion
We can conclude that-
1. Solids have definite shape and volume.
2. They are rigid and incompressible.
3. They do not diffuse into each other.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Do solids have definite shape?
Answer – Yes, solids have definite shape.
2. Can solids be compressed easily?
Answer- No, solids cannot be compressed.
3. What happens when a solid is hammered?
Answer – Solids may be broken down when they are hammered.
4. Why don’t solids diffuse?
Answer – Solids
have closely packed particles with strong force of attraction so they don’t
diffuse.
