Activity 1.1 Class 9 Science

This activity explains the idea of particles in matter and their nature. Every matter is made up of small particles and these particles have gaps between them.

Activity 1.1 Class 9 Science

Is matte made up of small particles

Materials used in the activity

1.  100mL beaker

2.  Sugar or salt

3.  Glass rod

4.  Marker or pen

5.  water

Procedure

We will take a 100 mL beaker and fill it half with water. We then mark the initial level of water on the outer surface of beaker using marker.

Now we add a small amount of sugar or salt into water and stir using glass rod.

When the substance is dissolved then note the level of water in the beaker.

Observation

We observe that the level of water in the beaker remains same as before. Sugar or slat gets dissolved in water completely.

Explanation

The particles of sugar or salt occupy the spaces between the water molecules. That’s why there is no visible change (increase) in water level. Sugar or salt particles get dissolved and form a uniform solution.

Conclusion

This activity demonstrates that

1.  Matter is made up of small particles.

2.  There is space or gaps between particles of matter

3.  There is no visible change in water level.

Frequently Asked Questions

1.  Does the salt or sugar really disappear in water?

Answer – No, they get dissolved in water and form a uniform solution.

2.  Do you notice any change in water level after adding sugar or salt?

Answer – No, there is no change in water level.

3.  Where do sugar particles disappear?

Answer – Sugar particles occupy space present between particles of water

4.  What does this activity prove?

Answer – This activity proves that every matter is made up of tiny particles.

5.  What will happen if we add sand to water?

Answer -  Sand particles are not soluble in water and they do not occupy space between particles of water so the level of water will increase.
