Activity 1.2 Class 9 Science

The activity demonstrates the particles of matter are too tiny and can be broken into smaller amounts without losing their characteristics properties.

Activity 1.2 Class 9 Science

How small are these particles of matter?

Aim of the activity

To show that the particles of matter are very small

Materials used in the activity

1. Potassium permangnet granules

2. 100 mL water

3. Beaker

4. Test tubes

5. Glass rod

Procedure

We take 2-3 crystals of potassium permanganate and dissolve them in 100 ml of water. we stir the solution properly to ensure the crystal dissolve in water completely.

Now we take out approximately 10 ml of this solution and put it into 90 ml of clear water and stir properly.

Again we take out 10 ml of this solution and put it into another 90 ml of clear water and keep diluting the solution like these 5 to 8 times.

After each dilution, we observe the colour of solution.

Observation

When we add potassium permanganate into water, water becomes pink or purple but on dilution the intensity of colour decreases but we can notice the pink colour(very light pink) visible after several dilution.

 Explanation

Crystal of potassium permanganate break down into smaller particles and these particles spread out into water. The colour of water become pink or purple.

The  intensity of pink colour becomes light.

Conclusion

We can conclude that

1. The particles of matter are very small in size.

2. A small amount of substance contains large number of particles.

3. These particles get divided into more smaller particles but don’t loss their properties.

 Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the colour of solution of KMnO4?

Answer -  Pink or purple

2. What happens to the colour of solution after each dilution?

Answer – The colour of the solution becomes lighter and lighter after each dilution.

3. What does the activity prove?

Answer – The activity prove that particles of matter  are small in size.

4. Do we find the water in the last beaker coloured?

Answer – Yes, The water in the last beaker is coloured but the intensity of colour is weak.
