Activity 1.6 Class 9 Science

This activity helps students understand the concept of intermolecular force between particles of matter in different physical states.

Activity 1.6 Class 9 Science

Is there Intermolecular Force present between particles of matter?

Aim of the activity

To demonstrate the difference in intermolecular forces in solids, liquids and gaseous particles

Materials used in the activity

1.  Open ground

2. Four groups of students

Procedure

We go to open ground in the school and divide ourselves into four groups. The first group should hold each other form back and lock arms like Bihu dancers. The second group should hold hands to form human chain. The third group should form a chain by touching each other with only their fingertips

Now the fourth group of students should run around and try to break the three human chains one by one into as many small groups as possible.

Observation

The fourth group of students try to break the three other human chains and we find that-

1. The third group formed by touching each other with only their fingertips breaks down first.

2. The second group formed by holding hand offers resistance but eventually breaks.

3. The first group which are formed like Bihu dancers has the strongest forces they are tightly held.

Explanation

1.  The first group of students (arm locked) shows the strong intermolecular forces like solid particles.

2. The second group (holding hand) show the less force like particles of liquids.

3. The third group(touching fingertips) represents gases ,where particles are loosely held.

4. The fourth group represent the external force.

Conclusion

We can conclude that

1.  There is weakest intermolecular force between particles of gases.

2. There is strongest intermolecular force between particles of solids.

3. The intermolecular force between particles of liquid is intermediate of both solids and gases.

Frequently Asked Questions
