Activity 2.14 Class 10 Science

In this activity, we will examine different salts samples to test their solubility in water, their effect on litmus paper. We can identify whether a salt is acidic, basic or neutral.

Activity 2.14 Class 10 Science

Activity 2.14- Testing the Nature of Salt Solutions

Aim of the activity

To investigate nature, solubility, pH of given salt solutions.

Materials Required

    1. Distilled water

    2. Test tubes

    3. String rod

    4. Salt samples

    5. Blue and red litmus paper

6 .Universal indicator and pH strips

Procedure

We take a small quantity of each salt sample in separate test tubes and add 10-15 mL of distilled water into each test tube.

Now we stir to check solubility.

After we dip red and blue litmus paper into each solution and note the colour change.

Now we check pH using pH paper and identify the nature of each salt solution.

Observation

S. No. Salt Formula Solubility in Water Action on Litmus Approximate pH Nature Acid Used Base Used
1 Sodium chloride NaCl Soluble No change ~7 Neutral HCl NaOH
2 Potassium nitrate KNO₃ Soluble No change ~7 Neutral HNO₃ KOH
3 Aluminium chloride AlCl₃ Soluble Blue to red ~5 Acidic HCl Al(OH)₃
4 Zinc sulphate ZnSO₄ Soluble Blue to red ~5.5 Acidic H₂SO₄ Zn(OH)₂
5 Copper sulphate CuSO₄ Soluble Blue to red ~4.5 Acidic H₂SO₄ Cu(OH)₂
6 Sodium acetate CH₃COONa Soluble Red to blue ~8 Basic CH₃COOH NaOH
7 Sodium carbonate Na₂CO₃ Soluble Red to blue ~9–10 Basic H₂CO₃ NaOH
8 Sodium hydrogen carbonate NaHCO₃ Soluble Red to blue (weak) ~8.5 Weakly Basic H₂CO₃ NaOH

Conclusion

Through this activity, we can conclude that different salts show different behaviour in aqueous solution depending on their parent acid and base. We can also classify salts as acidic, basic or neutral.

Frequently Asked Questions

    1. Why do some salts show acidic nature?

Answer – Because these salts are formed from a strong acid and a weak base.

    2. Why is distilled water used in this activity?

Answer – Distilled water is free from impurities and neutral in nature.

    3. What is the significance of knowing the pH of salts solutions?

Answer – This is useful in industries, agriculture and pharmaceuticals.
