NCERT Activity 3.12 Class 10 Science Explanation

In this activity, we will study the chemical reaction between metal and salt solution
and identify the type of chemical reaction. In the previous activity 3.11, we have discussed chemical reactions of metals with acids.

NCERT Activity 3.12 Class 10 Science Explanation

Displacement reaction between Metal and Salt Solution of other metal

Aim

To observe the chemical reaction between metal and salt solution

Materials Required

    1. Copper wire

    2. Iron nails

    3. Test tubes

    4. Iron sulphate solution

    5. Copper sulphate solution

Procedure

We take two clean test tubes and fill iron sulphate solution in one test tube and
copper sulphate solution in another.

Displacement reaction between iron and copper sulphate solutions activity 3.12

Now we dip copper wire in the iron sulphate solution and iron nail in copper
sulphate solution.

We leave the setups for 20 -30 minutes and after that we observe colour change and
deposited formed.

No

2

Iron nail in copper sulphate

(i)Reddish
brown on iron nail

(ii)solution turns light green

Yes

Explanation

Iron is more reactive than copper so it displaces copper metal from copper sulphate
solution. A reddish-brown deposit of copper metal is formed on iron nail and
the solution becomes light green

This is a displacement reaction.

Fe + CuSO4 →FeSO4   + Cu

But copper cannot displace iron from iron sulphate solution because copper is less
reactive than iron.

Conclusion

This activity demonstrates the displacement reaction and explains that iron is more
reactive than copper.

Frequently Asked Questions

   1. Why does iron displace copper from copper sulphate solution?

Answer
Iron is more reactive than copper so it displaces copper from copper sulphate
solution.

   2. What type of chemical reaction takes place in this activity?

Answer
Displacement reaction

   3. How is the activity 3.12 related to activities 3.9,3.10 and 3.11?

Answer
All these activities explain comparison of metal reactivity?

    4. Write the chemical reaction used in this activity?

Answer-
Fe + CuSO4 →FeSO4   + Cu
