Aim of the activity

 

To observe the colour and surface appearance of different

 

Materials Required

 

   1. Samples of four metals – iron , copper , aluminium  and magnesium

    2. Sandpaper

 

Procedure

 

We take sample pieces of four metals – iron, copper, aluminium and magnesium and
place them on a table and observe their surface appearance.

 

After that, we rub each sample with sandpaper and observe the surface appearance
again.

Explanation

 

Metal surface appear dull because their surface gets covered with layer of dust of
oxide and this hides the natural shine or lustre of the metal.

 

 When we rub the metal surface, this layer is removed and shiny surface appears.
