In this activity we test and compare physical properties of non-metals using the
same methods as used for metals in activity 3.1 to activity 3.6. In the next activity 3.8, we will discuss the nature of oxides of metals and non-metals.
Aim of the activity
To study the physical properties of non-metals
Material Required
1. Samples of carbon, sulphur and iodine
2. Sandpaper
3. Sharp knife
4. Hammer
5. Candle or spirit lamp
6. Electriccircuit
7. Clamp stand, pin, wax
Procedure
We will perform the activities as we performed for metals in the pervious
activities.
1. We observe the type of surface of non-metals to check dullness or brightness.
2. Try to cut with knife to check the hardness.
3. Hammer the samples to check the malleability.
4. Draw into wires to check ductility.
5. Heat the samples to test the thermal conductivity.
6. Connect to electrical circuit to test electrical conductivity
7. Tap to check sonority
