This activity explains the reaction of metallic oxides with acids.
Reaction of Metallic Oxides with Acids
Aim of the Activity
To observe the reaction between metallic oxide and acid and understand how metallic oxides behave like base.
Materials used in the activity
1. Copper oxide
2. Hydrochloric acid
3. Beaker
4. Glass rod
Procedure
We will take a little amount of copper oxide in a beaker and add dilute hydrochloric acid in it and stir it slowly. We will notice the
changes.
Observation
When acid is added to copper oxide, it gets dissolved in it and its black colour turns bluish-green. This is due to formation of new substance CuCl2.
Explanation
Copper oxide reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce a salt copper chloride and water.
CuO + HCl →CuCl2 + H2O
This is neutralization reaction. So metallic oxides behave like a base.
Conclusion
This activity demonstrate that metallic oxides are basic in nature and produce salt and water when react with an acid.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What does this activity prove about metallic oxides?
Answer
This activity proves that metallic oxides are basic in nature because they produce salt and water when react with acid.
2. Why does the solution turn bluish green?
Answer
The solution turns bluish green due to formation of copper chloride.
3. Can we use other metallic oxides in the activity 2.7?
Answer
Yes, we can use other metallic oxides like `MgO`,`ZnO` etc in this activity.
4.Write the chemical reaction of zinc oxide with dilute hydrochloric acid.
Answer
ZnO + HCl →ZnCl2 + H2O
